DIY Natural (No BS) Body Butter

14 Jul

MOMACEUTICALSAwhile back, I mentioned that I make my own body butter after reading up on all the chemicals that are in most store bought products and since then I’ve had several requests to share my recipe. Well, todays the day I’ll pass it along to you. I call this my “NO BS BODYCARE” because it doesn’t contain any  …..bad stuff.;)

Knowledge is power as they say and after I realized all the junk they put in beauty products, I decided to just start making my own. I wondered if I could really make products that were anti-inflammatory, anti-aging, provide great moisture & smell great...the verdict, yes it’s possible with just a few, simple ingredients.  I found some basic recipes, researched the individual ingredients & then tweaked them to suit my needs and this is my version. If you want to know more about the benefits, I list them at the bottom of this post.

Treats very dry skin/ezcema & rashes: My daughter had dry skin/ezcema, so I was having to apply lotion all the time & none of it really did the trick. Sure, it would make her skin soft but the dry patches were still there & the eczema never went away…I felt terrible for her. That’s where this body butter comes into play, it’s only a few natural ingredients so it’s safe, it’s an awesome moisturizer that keeps her skin soft longer than lotion & this recipe makes a big batch so I can slather it on her all I want. Her skin was also prone to infection since her eczema would crack, so I add Tea Tree Essential oil to her batch because it’s a natural disinfectant. Since using this butter daily (in addition to altering a few things in her diet) she no longer has eczema  flare ups, hasn’t had another skin infection and her skin has never looked better; yea!

What has the experience of making my own body care products been like? Honestly, it can be a tad messy if you’re not careful & takes up a little time, but to me the end result is worth it. This body butter is the best moisturizer that I’ve used and I feel comfortable using it on myself & my family because it only has a few ingredients. Better yet, I can create the base & add any essential oil I want, so I have several lovely scents in my cabinets 🙂

Here are the supplies you’ll need:

  • Double Boiler OR I just use a saucepan & glass jar
  • Mixer
  • Mixer Safe Bowl

Here are the ingredients needed:
(see instructions for substitutions if you don’t have all of these)

Where to get the ingredients: I picked my ingredients up at my local health store, Good Life Nutrition Company, who carry a great variety of natural products. I really enjoy shopping here because there are a million products out there, which can sometimes make deciding what to use confusing, but they have knowledgeable staff that can answer all of my questions. If not local, you can also find these products at your local health store or online, just make sure you get a good, quality product.

IMG_0509Instructions: (Photo examples below)

  • Fill saucepan about 1/3 full with water & put on medium heat
  • Combine all ingredients, except for the essential oils, into a glass bowl. I actually resuse a mason jar.
  •  As ingredients start to soften, stir mixture until completely melted
  • Once melted, turn heat off & let mixture cool for a little while (I let it sit for prob 15 mins)
  • If using a mason jar, pour into mixing bowl & then put in fridge for about an hour. if using a bowl, you can obviously skip the pouring step & put the bowl right in the fridge. After an hour the mix will be firmed up on top, yet still soft inside.
  • Whip with hand mixer until fluffy (10 mins or so). About 1/2 way through the mixing, once it’s getting fluffy, I add the essential oils & finish fluffing it. Note: I’ve also used my stand mixer for this DIY also but since I make this so often, it became easier to have a designated bowl for making home products, so I use the hand mixer method now.
  • Once fluffy, scrape mix out into glass jars. I buy those cute, wide mouth mason jars with lids. I personally love them & if you choose to use some of the mix as gifts, you’re gonna look like superwoman for whippin’ up such a fab looking body butter.
  • I then put back in the fridge for few hours (in the summer when my house is warmer) &  once it’s firmed up I just leave it out in my cabinet. If you house is over 75 degrees you may want to consider refrigerating yours more often so it won’t become liquidy.

Organize Makeup Using Desk Organizer

9 Apr

makeuporganizerWant an easy way to organize your makeup brushes & makeup?  Just use a rotating desk organizer. I have a couple of these & frankly, I never use them for what they’re intended for. Forget storing pens & office supplies, I use it to hold my phone, accessories, makeup…basically anything other than an office supply 😉 If you need an inexpensive way to organize some of your beauty supplies, try this workaround.
Until next time,

On to the recipe my friends…

  • Squeeze 1/2 a lemon into a bowl
  • Add 2 tbsp of honey
  • Stir together (should have a liquid consistency)
  • Apply on your face (note: I pull my hair back before doing this, its sticky)

DIY Face Cleaning Wipes

23 Mar

I love taking makeup remover face wipes in my purse or when I travel because they barely take up space.  But they can be so expensive — $0.20 a wipe adds up.  So, I make my own!

It only costs $0.03 per wipe which means major savings compared to the name brand.

What You’ll Need

Paper towels

• 2 tbsp. face wash

• 2 tbsp. coconut oil

• 2 to 3 cups of water

Measure 2 tbsp. of coconut oil into a microwave-safe dish and zap for a few seconds until it is liquid. Mix with two cups of water and a couple squirts of face wash. You can add more water if you feel the need to. Personally, I add 2 cups, then if they dry out, I add a little more.

Soak the paper towels in the solution. I chose Viva because they’re absorbent. DO NOT use a cheap paper towel or they will completely fall apart. You can also cut the paper towels in half with a knife if you’d like to or buy the towels that are perforated into smaller sheets.

Store in a sealed container or separate into zipper baggies.

So let’s compare prices… Here’s the breakdown: 400 store-bought makeup remover wipes cost $80. The same number of the D-I-Y version costs $12. That’s a savings of $68!

9 Natural Beauty Tips

17 Mar

20130317-230230It’s always nice to learn about natural beauty tips because they’re easy to use and so much better for us than using commercial beauty products with unknown ingredients and chemicals. Even if we don’t always use natural beauty products in our beauty routine, we can treat our skin to some natural beauty tips that will nourish and nurture your skin!

Natural beauty tips are not only good for us, they’re pretty easy on our wallets, also! Take this beauty tip for example: using aloe vera and coconut oil to soothe dry skin is cost effective, super easy and all-natural! If you experience dry skin, try mixing or blending the gel from an aloe vera leaf with a couple tablespoons of coconut oil and apply it to your skin!

If you want to be a natural beauty, try using this simple and soothing face wash that’s appropriate for just about all skin types! Grab some uncooked oatmeal, mix about a handful of oatmeal with some warm water and use it to wash your face. It might be a little awkward to use but oatmeal has wonderful benefits for skin, such as reducing redness, protecting skin from UV damage and calming dry, itchy skin.

This next beauty tip is about as natural as they get! Take a kiwi and mash it up to use it as an easy and effective facial exfoliator. If you don’t have any kiwis around, you can also use a banana, pineapple, peach or papaya to mash up and mix with a couple tablespoons of yogurt. This exfoliator is best suited for normal skin but make sure you don’t have any allergies to the ingredients as well!

Another way to show your natural beauty is to use an all-natural setting spray for your makeup. All you need is some filtered water and some glycerin or aloe vera juice! Grab a small spray bottle that sprays a fine mist and mix three parts of the filtered water to one part of the aloe vera juice or glycerin. Give yourself a couple of spritzes after you apply makeup and you’re set! Be sure to keep it in the fridge so it keeps longer!

If you have some unruly hairs like me, you’ll love this simple and cheap beauty tip! Use a small dab of coconut oil to tame broken hairs, add sheen to your hair and use it as a heat protectant. It has been noted that the women of Fiji often used coconut oil to protect their hair from damaging UV rays and many women also use it to create a protective barrier from heat tools and your hair! Make sure your heat tool isn’t turned up too high when you use this as a heat protectant!

I’ve always liked to have a little lemon with my water because I love how fresh it tastes. Little did I know that adding lemon juice to your water has great skin benefits! Add some lemon juice to warm water to give your body a powerful boost of vitamin C, which will help purge toxins and also help keep your skin clear of blemishes!

I know there are tons of homemade hair mask recipes out there, but this one has got to be one of the easiest and you’ll likely always have the ingredients on hand when you need it! Mix a tablespoon of honey with three tablespoons of olive oil in a small, microwaveable bowl. Stick it in the microwave in thirty second increments until it’s all warmed and apply it to your hair for a half hour, rinse and shampoo!

This next natural beauty tip is a great way to prep our limbs for the upcoming season! Cut an orange in half and use it to rub on your elbows and knees to exfoliate dry, dead skin cells and smooth your skin! The acid in the orange will not only get rid of dead skin but it’ll also help lighten up dark elbows and knees, so you’ll be ready to rock those shorts and tanks in no time!

This last tip on natural beauty might sound quite weird. In fact, I’d never heard of this little tip before, but after some research it turns out that eating carrots is a dynamite food for skin! Eating carrotsgives your body a big dose of vitamin A, beta-carotene and antioxidants that help with anti-aging and help prevent acne!

I hope you use some of the natural beauty tips and enjoy the wonderful benefits of using natural skin care products that you can make yourself! All of these natural beauty tips can be used anytime you want to swap out some of the traditional beauty products and just take it back to the basics! Do you make any of your own natural beauty products?

Thicken Lashes with Powder; Updated

14 Mar

I’m always looking for ways to perfect my projects & for this trick, I’ve changed the steps.  Before, I was applying the powder to dry eyelashes, but I had to be very careful when doing this…I do not have a delicate way of doing anything & if I’m not careful I’d end up with powder in my eye, not cool! SO, I’ve switched up the way I apply it. Now, before I apply the powder, I apply a coat of mascara so that the powder adheres to the wet lashes. My previous post with the revised instructions are below.

Want thicker lashes? Next time you’re putting on your makeup, apply some powder to your lashes to add some volume. When I use this trick, it’s the closest I’ve gotten to looking like I’m sporting some falsies

Thicken Eyelash

Just follow these 3 steps:

  • First, apply some mascara

Next, apply some baby powder or translucent powder while mascara is still wet. I apply using an eyeshadow brush. When applying be careful not to get any in your eyes.

  • Apply a few more coats of mascara
  • Curl lashes
  • Bat those lashes 😉
